What is Radon?

Radon is a radioactive gas that has been found in homes all over the United States. Radon comes from the natural breakdown of uranium that's found in soil, rock and water, and gets into the air that we breathe. You cannot see, smell or taste radon, but it may be a problem in your home.  When you breathe air containing radon, there is an increased risk of getting lung cancer.  The Surgeon General of the United States has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. According to the EPA, radon is estimated to cause about 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year.

How Does Radon Get Inside My Home?

Radon typically moves up through the ground to the air above, and into your home through cracks and other holes in the home's foundation. Warm air leaves up and out of your home, which pulls in replacement air from lower home levels, bringing in soil gasses with it. Radon can also enter your home through well water. Your home can trap radon inside.

Radon risks increase in the winter when tightly closed windows and today's better sealed homes help trap radon indoors and let levels rise high enough to be harmful.

Sure Foundation Home Inspections can conduct a short-term (48 hour) measurement to with your home inspection or as a stand-alone service. Contact us today to learn more!!
